    Bio & Intro:

I am a Kent Rotarian and a “Parkie”. I have Parkinson’s. They say exercise is to Parkinson’s as insulin is to diabetes. They say. My exercise therapy is boxing. And as a Rock Steady Boxing affiliate, I’ve helped hundreds of people with Parkinson’s fight the good fight here in the Northwest. Nationally there are more than 40,000 of us spending our time, money and sweat boxing to put Parkinson’s on the ropes. But, that leaves over a million people with Parkinson’s who don’t get their daily dose of exercise. They want to know it really works. Reasonable. Anecdotal stories aside, it is time to put stories to the test, do the research, collect the data and crunch the numbers. We’re doing just that. We are Boxers with Parkinson’s; a nonprofit association and research project and we will soon manage the largest study of exercise therapy for Parkinson’s ever conducted.

Barbara moved to Port Ludlow from London, England with her husband, Ed, in 2004.  She and her family have lived overseas for 26 years in Paris, Singapore, and London. Their 2 children were born overseas and are called Third Culture Kids. She and two partners created a children’s book on moving, a board and card game for highly mobile families. Barbara has designed and conducted workshops for schools, non-profits, and international companies on transition, stress management, emotional intelligence, and communication skills.  She has an MSW and conducted a private counseling practice in London, working with high mobility populations and clients diagnosed with PTSD. She is connected to a number of Japanese American community groups and is the Chair of the Olympic Peninsula Bluebills and board member of the Peninsula Support Organization, whose mission is to bring STEM programs to the Peninsula. She is a past board member of the Jefferson County Hospice Foundation and writes articles for the Voice, a local news magazine. She makes presentations to non-profit boards and community groups on Transition and Stress Management as well as presentations about the incarceration of 120,000 people of Japanese descent during WWII and the reverberations that are felt 78 years later.
